The human brain, when given a clear choice between pleasure and pain, will choose pleasure. So it's great for folks to have healthy examples of both well done and poorly done divorces in celebrities lives. Their work is fantastic, but it's their rules, values and beliefs about relationships that help everyone the most.
Here's the article reprinted from People magazine:
How Bruce Willis Conquered Jealousy of Ashton
WEDNESDAY JUNE 06, 2007 10:10 AM EDT
By Emily Fromm
Bruce Willis famously gets along with ex-wife Demi Moore's new husband, Ashton Kutcher – but, he reveals, it wasn't always so easy.
The Live Free or Die Hard star, 52, who has said he even vacations with his ex and Kutcher, tells the July issue of Playboy that it was pal Will Smith who helped him get over his jealousy when Moore and Kutcher first started dating.
"During some very dark hours he talked to me about it," Willis says. "He said, 'Dude, you've got to do whatever it takes to get the kids and all the spouses or the girlfriend together. You've got to show your kids it's okay.' It was like a light went on. Ding. So Will, thanks. And thanks for all those good movies you're making."
I was so impressed with Bruce Willis and Will Smith when I read that article. Then my daughter reminded me that Will got his healthiest family rules from his wife Jada and we'll probably never know who taught such healthy thinking to Jada, but we can all thank God for that footnote person in celebrity history. That one person has dramatically reduced suffering in a lot of parents and children going through divorces.
"A parent's hardships
are best viewed as opportunities
to teach our children by example
how best to handle hardships.
No one has to live by the rule "You've got to do whatever it takes to get the kids and all the spouses or the girlfriend together. You've got to show the kids it's okay." But lord knows we ought to for our kids sakes. If nothing else so they can learn by experience how to do it wisely and kindly, how to keep themselves on the smart and healthy end of the divorce bell curve if they ever have to get a divorce themselves someday (as most will).
